how do i pay atention in math klass?
my teacherr makess mathh soo boringg && i justt cantt pay atention.. wun reasun is b/c i tlk witt da kids aorund meh.. && dat distracts meh.. && my teacher also sed dat im failing math soo im in danger of geting left back.. wich i dnt relly want to happen.. soo wat do i do? i go to extra classes at my skool on saturdays…… daa onlyy improvement dere has been is a 70.. buh da test befo dat was a F- && DA OTHR WUNS WERE 30′S. && stuff.. itss alsoo relly hard.. && yeh.. wah can i do 2 improve my self in math?
I’m a retired teacher. I’ll confess that I felt the same way in math classes in grade school and high school. Luckily for me, things “clicked” in college. I was nervous when it became my turn to teach math, but I learned to LOVE it! I think I presented it in a way so that kids who hate math would love it, too.
The most important thing I believe you can do is stop by to talk with your teacher him/herself. Explain to teacher exactly what you said here. The outside classes will help if you are MOTIVATED to learn, otherwise you’ll be bored there, too; they’ll just gobble up your time. Ask your teacher for help in feeling motivated. Talking in class is distracting for those who are, sincerely, trying to learn. Start to hold back on the side conversation. Do it for your own good. I’d tell my students who loved to chat, “you can’t record and play back at the same time.” using a tape-recorder analogy. I guess today I’d have to say “you can’t rip a cd while listening to it”.
I regret not having spoken to my teachers about the trouble I had in math. I couldn’t focus well, especially at homework time. I’d say to myself, “If I didn’t understand it in class- where it was explained (maybe too quickly for me), how am I supposed to understand how to do it here at home?” Talk to your teacher- that’s what s/he’s getting paid for.
