I want to write and publish a book– a collection of essays or reflections. What do I need to do to start?
Books of a spiritual, self-growth or inspirational matter are among my favorites and I think I have the skill, research resources and interest to write one of my own. I just don’t know anything about the publishing side of books. Can you give me some advise?
My advice would be to start writing your essays first. Once you have a collection put together and edited, you can get started thinking about the publishing aspect.
I know this probably isn’t the answer you were looking for. Too many writers spend too much time finding out how to move forward without spending enough time writing the works that will move them forward. That is why there are so many aspiring authors and few published ones. The published ones write. The perpetually aspiring ones have nothing written because they’re spending all their time researching how to format them.
Write write write write write. Once you have something written, it will be a lot easier to learn about the publishing options and find someone interested in taking your work. (A publisher can’t work with something that isn’t written, and you’d rather the be excited about working with you, instead of tell you, “Come back when it’s done!”)
