To achieve our goal of spiritual maturity, we must take the task of learning about God and study the Bible seriously.
Learning is not passive. No can be handed biblical knowledge and godly character on a silver platter. We have to work at it and strive for it. Each individual must be committed to learning, if the personal and corporate spiritual maturity is to be achieved.
First, we must have the desire to learn. Without passion for learning, teaching the best in the world is stale, dry and boring. We love knowledge and wisdom and growth for its own sake and love of God … completely regardless of who becomes the school, or are "interesting" or not. If only we learn from a particular person or group of persons, not we can say that we love to learn. People come and go in our lives. Learning is eternal.
Secondly, we hope to learn. If we go to church or a class with a selfless attitude, we'll just outside it. If we expecting to learn, we will be looking for understanding, for new discoveries, truths that were not aware of, and for how to apply the lessons of our lives.
Third, we must do time to learn. Learning can not be an afterthought, or treated with a "I'll see if I click on" attitude. Otherwise, we will treat it lightly, or be looking at our watch, instead of focusing on the issue.
Fourth, we must put forth the effort to learn. Pay attention. Listen on purpose. Take notes. Make additional studies. Apply the truths learned.
Fifth, we must be motivated to learn. If we stick only to external stimuli for our spiritual maturity, we will not grow as God wants. We must seek wisdom and knowledge of our own will, provided it is located. Books, tapes, videos, teachers, counselors, mentors, friends … we must seek every opportunity for growth and seize with both hands.
In short, learning is an active verb. If we are to mature in Christ, we must be totally committed to maintaining the wisdom and knowledge and godly character – each time of our lives.
